Former BharatPe CPO Ankur Jain Develops AI Doctor to Serve 8 Billion People

Former BharatPe CPO Ankur Jain develops AI doctor, Jivi.ai. This startup will be focused on using AI in healthcare. Jivi MedX is the first model that performed better than OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Med-PaLM 2.

Jain’s vision is to develop a medical companion that is free and accessible to everyone. This startup’s primary aim is to create a product useful for both doctors and users. Jain co-founded Jivi.ai with G V Sanjay Reddy, Chairman of Reddy Ventures.

Who is Ankur Jain?

Ankur Jain is the former Chief Product Officer of BharatPe. He left the fintech giant last year to pursue his interests in healthcare and AI. Jain co-founded Jivi.ai with G V Sanjay Reddy, the chairman of Reddy Ventures. He has a background in machine learning and AI.

The vision behind developing an AI doctor is to build an AI companion for the world. AI is searching use cases in other healthcare domains like drug discovery and genoming. However, his startup’s key focus is on primary healthcare.

Origination of Jivi.ai

Ankur Jain established Jivi.ai in January 2024. Within a few months, the startup presented an initial model, Jivi MedX. On the Open Medical LLM Leaderboard, it surpassed well-known models. It included OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Med-PaLM 2. This accomplishment set a high standard for the company. It’s also signalling its potential for the betterment of the healthcare industry.

Jivi MedX and the Future Models

Jivi MedX is just the start of a series of healthcare-focused models. Jain also revealed plans for a “Model Cluster.” It will include specialised models for various medical fields, such as ophthalmology and diabetes.

Jain also said, “The next model from Jivi will be a vision model. We are working on a multimodal MedX.” This model will be a part of the Multimodal MedX suite.

JiviMedX is Powered by Llama 3

Ankur Jain revealed that JiviMedX is powered by Llama 3. It’s an 8 billion and 70 billion parameter model. The firm began by testing out the existing models. However, none of them delivered good enough results for the medical field.

Jain revealed, “We tried Llama 2, Mistral, and a few other domain-specific models. However, none of them helped us achieve the results we were looking for. The accuracy was, at best, around 55-60%, which was not good enough.”

The startup started experimenting with different approaches. They wanted to maintain the accuracy of the models. It included Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RHLF) and Direct Preference Optimisation (DPO) frameworks. However, these methods did not produce the expected results.

JiviMedX has a score of 91.65% across Leaderboard’s nine benchmark categories. However, Jain adds that even 92% is not good enough. They are trying to increase the model’s accuracy level to 95%.

MedX uses Llama 3 for its intelligence. However, the other models Jivi is building will not necessarily be powered by Llama 3. Depending on the use case, other models in the cluster could use a different intelligence model.

Is Jivi.AI a Chatbot?

Ankur Jain develops AI doctor for the betterment of the whole world. The startup is aiming to create a product that’s helpful for doctors and its users. Jain disclosed that this AI doctor app will have built-in voice capabilities. This means that anyone can use the app and have a conversation in their own language.

The Stanford Alumni says, “We will have voice capabilities. The models will eventually understand the top 25% of the world’s languages. That means it will cover around 90% of the population. However, there is no technology yet. Even OpenAI has not released the voice capabilities for GPT-4o.”

Further, Ankur Jain added, “I think it will become mainstream in six months. We are not building a chatbot. People will have to describe their symptoms to the model. For this, voice is the best way and medium.”

Final Line

Ankur Jain develops AI doctor for the 8 billion people in the world. He wants to build an AI companion that is free and accessible to everyone. He established Jivi.ai in January 2024, and within a few months, Jivi MedX came into the picture. Jivi.ai is not just a simple chatbot. It has voice capabilities that have the top languages. This initiative will make life much easier both for the users and doctors.
